Refuelings happen at dozens of stations, paid for with a mix of cards, and the only real signal that something has gone wrong — a leak, a mistyped odometer, a billing mismatch from the card provider, or simply a driver filling up more than the vehicle needs — is a spend number that looks a little too high when the statement lands.
